Know Before You Go

A little planning makes all the difference. Keep these things in mind before your stargazing trip to Southeast Montana.

Cell service is limited.

Many of our best stargazing sites are in remote areas with little to no cell coverage. Download offline maps, save directions ahead of time and let someone know your plans before you head out.

Roads may be unpaved.

Access to some Trail to the Stars sites requires driving on gravel or dirt roads. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for several locations. Check road conditions with the local county or the Montana Department of Transportation before heading out, especially after rain.

Leave No Trace.

Our dark sky sites are special because they’re wild and undisturbed. Pack out everything you bring in, stay on designated roads and trails, and be respectful of the land and any wildlife you encounter.

Camping reservations & fees.

Some sites require camping fees or advance reservations, particularly during peak summer months. Check with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks or the Bureau of Land Management for current information before your visit.

Weather can change quickly.

Eastern Montana weather is famously unpredictable. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and temperatures can swing dramatically between day and night. Check the forecast before you go and have a backup plan. Use weather resources like Clear Sky Chart, Weather Underground and NOAA’s hourly forecasts.

Fire restrictions may apply.

During dry conditions, campfires may be restricted or prohibited. Check current fire restrictions at mtfireinfo.org before your trip.
