Cowboy Country Under the Stars – Miles City & Strawberry Hill

Miles City, Strawberry Hill & Matthews Recreation Area – 3 Days

Miles City is one of Montana’s most storied towns: the self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World, home to the legendary Bucking Horse Sale, a vibrant local culture and more personality per square mile than almost anywhere else in the state. Pair it with some of the best accessible stargazing in the region—at Strawberry Hill Recreation Area and Matthews Recreation Area—and you have a trip that delivers by day and dazzles by night.

Day 1 – Miles City: Museums, The Yellowstone & Strawberry Hill

Arrive in Miles City and settle into the rhythm of this proudly Western town. Start with the Range Riders Museum, a remarkable collection covering Native American history, pioneer life and the cattle industry that built this region. Then head to the WaterWorks Art Museum on the banks of the Yellowstone—housed in the striking concrete basins of the city's 1910 waterworks facility, it's a genuinely unexpected gem, with a permanent collection that includes Montana's largest public collection of L.A. Huffman photographs and rotating exhibits of western and contemporary art.

Spend the afternoon along the Yellowstone River at Pirogue Island State Park, a lovely spot for walking, fishing or watching the river go by. In the evening, explore Main Street—Miles City has a great downtown with local shops, restaurants and Burger Trail stops that reflect the town’s authentic character.

Next, head north to Strawberry Hill Recreation Area, one of the standout stargazing locations on Montana's Trail to the Stars. The drive takes you into the open breaks country above the Yellowstone, where the sky gets very, very big. Before dark, Strawberry Hill offers hiking and wildlife viewing. After the sun sets, the Milky Way is regularly visible overhead, and on clear nights, even faint nebulae are within reach of binoculars.

Overnight in Miles City or Strawberry Hill Recreation Area.

Day 2 – River Time & Matthews Recreation Area

Make your way to Matthews Recreation Area, about nine miles northeast of Miles City on the Yellowstone River. In the afternoon, fish, kayak, birdwatch or simply walk the cottonwood-lined bank. It's a beautiful, low-key stretch of river with a peaceful riparian character that feels a world away from the road.

As the evening comes on, stay put. Matthews is a designated Trail to the Stars stargazing site, and its position along the Yellowstone—away from town lights, with open sightlines—makes for a genuinely excellent night sky. Camping is permitted on-site if you want to fall asleep to the sound of the river.

Overnight at Matthews Recreation Area or in Miles City.
