When the sun dips below the rimrock and the prairie goes quiet, Southeast Montana reveals its most dazzling secret: a night sky so clear, so vast and so brilliantly alive that it stops you in your tracks. This is Big Sky Country after dark—and there’s really nowhere better to be starstruck.
Southeast Montana is a cornerstone of Montana’s Trail to the Stars, a statewide network of over 40 prime stargazing destinations across some of the least light-polluted land in the contiguous U.S. Anchoring our region is Medicine Rocks State Park, designated an International Dark Sky Sanctuary—one of only a handful in the world. With rugged badlands, wide-open prairies and river corridors, our stargazing sites offer a front-row seat to the cosmos.
Explore our stargazing itineraries below and plan your trip under the stars. You can also visit Montana’s Trail to the Stars for the full statewide map and all 40+ sites.
