Powder River Stargazing – Broadus, Ashland & Diamond Butte Lookout

Broadus, Ashland & Diamond Butte Lookout – 3 Days

The Powder River country of Southeast Montana is one of the state’s best-kept secrets: a land of sweeping grasslands, timbered ridges and sky that goes on forever. This itinerary centers on Diamond Butte Lookout, a historic fire lookout tower perched high above the Powder River basin with 360-degree views that are jaw-dropping by day and otherworldly after dark—with two more Trail to the Stars stops along the way.

Day 1 – Broadus

Begin in Broadus, a ranching town on the Powder River with genuine western charm and a welcoming local culture. Stop at a Burger Trail location for a taste of Montana hospitality before exploring the Powder River Historical Museum, which covers the deep history of this region—from Indigenous cultures to the cattle drives that shaped the American West.

In the afternoon, head northwest toward Ashland through the rolling grasslands. This is open range country, where cattle outnumber people and pronghorn graze in plain sight. On the way, pull into Red Shale Campground or Holiday Spring Campground—both are designated Montana’s Trail to the Stars stargazing sites situated in the breaks country between Broadus and Ashland. Either makes an excellent first-night base: quiet, dark and genuinely remote.

Overnight at Red Shale Campground or Holiday Spring Campground.

Day 2 – Ashland & Diamond Butte or Tongue River Reservoir State Park

Drive northwest to Ashland and visit the St. Labre Indian School & Museum, one of the most moving cultural experiences in eastern Montana. The museum chronicles the history and living culture of the Northern Cheyenne people, and the setting in a dramatic canyon along the Tongue River is stunning.

From Ashland, make your way to Diamond Butte Lookout. The drive up is an adventure in itself, winding through pine-covered ridges with views opening up as you climb. The lookout tower (reservations required) offers a truly remarkable perspective on the surrounding landscape. Even the parking area at the base provides extraordinary skies after dark.

If you can’t get reservations at Diamond Butte Lookout—Tongue River Reservoir State Park, about 1.25 hours southwest of Ashland—offers stargazing above a stunning 12-mile reservoir set in red shale and juniper canyons.

Overnight at Diamond Butte Lookout (reserve in advance) or Tongue River Reservoir State Park.

Day 3 – Scenic Return Through the Powder River Basin

Take a leisurely morning at your campsite before heading back through the grasslands. The drive through Powder River County is scenic in any direction, and early morning is prime wildlife-viewing time—look for elk, mule deer, sharp-tailed grouse and golden eagles. Stop in Broadus for a farewell meal before heading home.
